Why Compost?

Around 80 million tons of waste that goes into US landfills annually is material that could be turned into compost. (Source: US EPA). In landfills, this organic material releases methane – a powerful greenhouse gas contributing to global warming. Composting helps divert food scraps and yard waste from landfills and turns it into healthy matter for future agricultural projects.

Why Potato Starch?

The potato starch used to make If You Care Compostable Trash Bags comes from starch potatoes. They are grown not as a food source but only for starch production. These potatoes are too high in starch to be good for food meaning there is no diversion from food supplies. Additionally, producing the same amount of starch from these potatoes as from corn requires 40% less land. Other compostable bags made from corn require more water, but potatoes require no irrigation and need only normal rainfall. Potato starch bags are also stronger than bags made from corn starch.
